Status of CAM therapies to be placed on par with Conv. Med. in Switzerland

In Switzerland, Homeopathy, phytomedicine, anthroposophic medicine, traditional chinese medicine and acupuncture are to receive the same status as conventional medicine, when it comes to the reimbursement of health care costs . The  local mandatory health-insurance provider of Switzerland will continue to cover the expenses of these 5 CAM therapies.

Initially, since 2012, the payment of these health care approaches had only been provisional.

The ministry of interior has now argued that the provision of evidence of efficacy, convenience, and profitability of these CAM approaches, will never entirely be possible, and has consequently decided to assume the principle of trust for these health care approaches.

The decree will be brought to hearing in June 2016 , and is aimed at coming into effect in May 2017. As such, a continued provision of access to these CAM therapies will be  warranted.

Healthcare costs less with CAM, mortality in CAM and Conventional medicine equivalent

According to a recent study, using CAM in healthcare is a cost-effective alternative to conventional practice.  An economic evaluation of  the cost of CAM compared to conventional medicine, appraised in a 6-year study in Holland, showed that CAM was generally less expensive than conventional treatment. Furthermore this study came to the conclusion that mortality rates of patients treated with CAM compared to conventional medicine was equivalent.
